Not much on The Watchmen

I was really excited to write about this one after the movie. Since this site has hoped to generate discussion, I have to confess that many of the movies I end up deciding to write about (12 Angry Men for example) aren’t exactly ripe in people’s minds as begging for a dialogue. So to take on the most hyped movie since Dark Knight, and probably one of the most hyped movies of the 21st Century, seemed like an exciting focal point. That, and after I watched the movie, there WAS so much to say. I think I spent 60 minutes alone talking about Rorschach’s mask.
I then, foolishly but valiently, vowed to to read the book first. After all, much of the hype and “success” of this movie depended on its adaptation of the written word. The two issues with this are obvious, but none the less A) I found myself completely lacking the time to go through it (only in the midst of Chapter 5 as I type this) and B) hardcore fans have already poured their hearts out about their feelings of this adaptation and their love and/or hate of it.
So here I sit, nearly a month after its fateful release, and I realize I have nothing to add that hasn’t already been said. What I can do, however, is try to point you had a few well written bits that don’t involve how actors complained about their costume. I mean seriously…have him talk to Jim Carrey while doing The Grinch…and from what I hear of how long it took (a few hours) it still has nothing on some other examples…but I’m degressing.
So I’d recommend checking out the following:
This article is about the design and feel for the movie, and some of the inspirations that were used (such as Dr. Strangelove and Taxi Driver). Being as this piece was a parallel history story, I just kinda found it interesting.
For you audio people, two NPR links that I would say are worth your time. First, for the nerd in you, an analysis of of the Physics lessons derived in The Watchmen. Second, a comment on, well, the comments. I guess I’ve neglected to put any actual reviews here, because hopefully you’ve already seen it yourself and decided if you liked it or didn’t like it. But if you are also reading this, I can only imagine you have found a more distingiushed reviewer to mull over their ideas. So sorry if you wanted more links like that last one but I just couldn’t justify it.
But my favorite link, and the funniest, is an article that dares to ask the question, what if some other director we all know and love had tried to adapt The Watchmen. Check out the slide show, I can only hope you’ll find one of the alternate realities to be work a laugh.
