The Incredibles started with Mr. Incredible bumbling up a battle and basically being fired, a pretty demoralizing way to start a superhero movie. I can't remember how Monsters Inc started though.

Loved this analysis, and completely agree that while Ratatouille was more entertaining, this was an excellent portrayal of all the best Pixar traits.

Keep up the blog, Mike. The posts are always interesting.

Funny you should mention Superbad Jeff. Though I don't know if it ever had huge amounts of hype, I enjoyed Forgetting Sarah Marshall far more than I thought I would...possibly more than I should have period. Turns out some people do know what kind of romantic comedies I will funny...?

I would make a similar claim, on a smaller scale, of my experience with 'Superbad.'

Funny you should say...half way through Memoirs right now...and I did end up borrowing one of D-wingers copies of Watchmen and reading it at Panera. The book was great, as were the reactions to me reading a large and violent "comic book" in such a public space.

Hey, did you ever read the book? I know you seemed kinda against it in your last post about the watchmen, but considering you don't have high schoolers knocking on your door every 10 minutes for a few months, you should try and grab it, I heard its amazing.

Disappointment sir, disappointment.

I come here expecting a review, instead I get links to things that I have already seen/read. I hope that I can have an intimate discussion with you on the subject of this movie later, as I feel you have done a sub-par job. However, I am/was in a similar predicament as you about reading the comic book. But from what I have read/heard, I cannot discern if it would have been worth it to finish the book, as the ending was changed for the movie.

I agree with you that this movie was extremely well done, based off of an extremely well-done graphic novel. That being said, I take some issue with changes made in the transition between the two.

The movie, released in the wake of a Bush '04 reelection that disheartened many liberals, comes off as a sort of leftist wet-dream- a masked superhero saving England from the excesses of a government that looks like the most garish caricature of the Bush administration they could think of. Sure, as a liberal it is fun to watch conservative ideologues get skewered (sometimes literally) and see people of all ages stand up against an oppressive government, but it smacks of extreme Disneyland fantasy. The graphic novel offers no such glossy ending is and decidedly more, well, British.

Don't get me wrong; I just watched the movie again last weekend and enjoyed it. It holds up remarkably well. I just would have liked to see more Alan Moore and less Michael Moore.

I haven't seen "Dancer", but "Eight Crazy Nights" is a terrible, terrible movie. So is "What the @#%$^ Do We Know?" (or whatever the title of that intellectual abortion is).

I think comic books are ultimately what made me an English major... ultimately, they address sophisticated themes with a directness that many novels can't because of the constraints of subtlety and reality. Yet somehow, <i>The Dark Knight<i> managed to somehow infuse subtlety and reality into a world where people dress up like clowns and bats and fight each other. Questions of justice, chaos, human nature... this is a lesson on philosophy snuck into a movie with explosions and fight scenes. Come for the punches, stay for the lingering questions on whether creating more powerful weapons to fight evil will ultimately lead to more powerful evil. This movie captured the essence of comic books while deconstructing them at the same them.
